Royal Borough support for VE Day street parties

The Royal Borough is encouraging communities to come together with friends, family and neighbours to celebrate 80 years since Victory in Europe (VE Day) this May.

The historic anniversary, commemorating the end of World War II in Europe on 8 May 1945, will see celebrations planned across the country on May Day bank holiday Monday on 5 May.

As was the case for other historic occasions, the council is supporting residents wanting to hold a street party over the bank holiday by cancelling the cost to close a residential road – the deadline for applications is Thursday 10 April 2025.

Residents should ensure they have consulted with neighbours before applying, ahead of the council reviewing the application to ensure the route is safe and doesn’t affect a main through-route or public transport route before confirming it can go ahead.

If approved, applicants are responsible for ensuring emergency services can access the road if required and any rubbish is cleared before the road can be reopened.

Cabinet Member for Communities and Leisure, Cllr Jack Douglas said: “We want to make it easier for you to have fun together and honour those who served, so we are waiving the fee for a street party road closure.

“If you want to hold a street party please apply as soon as possible before the Thursday 10 April deadline.”
