Council targets town centre fly-tipping in Windsor

Our ‘cleaner greener safer’ task force has targeted Windsor town centre as part of the borough-wide crack down on fly-tipping and supporting the national Great British Spring Clean campaign.

On Thursday 3 April, officers, councillors and contractors for street cleaning, waste and enforcement visited Windsor town centre to engage with residents and businesses directly and clear waste. They also cleaned up the town centre, picking litter and removing graffiti and fly-posting.

Before the day, Windsor town centre businesses were reminded of their responsibilities to manage their commercial waste along with the steps to take to make sure all their waste is stored, secured and cleared regularly.

As part of the day, Environmental Health teams also carried out checks on food businesses, reminding them of their responsibilities.

Town centre residents were also reminded about dealing with their domestic waste, with advice and information on what can and can’t be recycled in the borough sent to properties, making it easier for them to manage waste correctly.

This follows the crackdown in Maidenhead town centre earlier this year, which has led to 11 fines being issued to residents and businesses. Fly-tipping is a serious criminal offence that risks a fine of £400, or up to £50,000 if prosecuted in court.

Councillor Richard Coe, Cabinet Member for Household and Regulatory Services, said: "Fly-tipping spoils everyone's enjoyment of our town and poses risks to public health and safety. We are determined to crack down on this antisocial behaviour.

“The council’s targeted action shows that we’re proactively working to prevent fly-tipping in the borough and have reminded residents and businesses of the role they play in keeping our spaces clean.”

Residents are able to let the council know if they see fly-tipping in the area, or even someone dumping their rubbish so that it can be investigated and in some cases prosecuted, via the report it section of our website
