Royal Borough updates plan to prevent domestic abuse and offer support to victims

An updated strategy aiming to prevent domestic abuse and promote the support available to victims has been adopted by the Royal Borough this week.

This follows a review of the existing strategy that runs to the end of the year, and includes more focus on support for victims of domestic abuse through safe accommodation, strengthening community-based services for victims and ways to respond to perpetrators.

With on average, 3,000 domestic abuse reports to police in the borough every year – approximately eight reports a day – residents are reminded that domestic abuse is not always physical and can take many forms, including sexual, economic, psychological abuse and controlling and coercive behaviour.

In the new year, the strategy will be put into action with a stronger emphasis on ensuring that victims from the hardest to reach communities and with protected characteristics receive the support they deserve – alongside a sustained focus on preventing domestic abuse from happening in the first place.

In 2025, the strategy will also be supported by a review of the way in which victims of domestic abuse access the housing they need and wider partnership work that builds expert knowledge on topics including survivors’ mental health.

The DASH Charity provides the council’s domestic abuse support service and offers victims of abuse confidential advice, access to support and safe accommodation. Their helpline is available on 01753 549865 from Monday to Thursdays from 9.30am-3pm and on Fridays from 9.30am to 12pm.

For residents experiencing domestic abuse - support is also available 24/7, by calling the police on 999 or contacting the National Domestic Abuse Helpline on 0808 2000 247.

Councillor Catherine del Campo, Cabinet Member for Adults, Health and Housing services, said: “Domestic abuse can happen to anyone and takes many forms. This new strategy demonstrates our commitment to prevent domestic abuse in our communities and provide consistent, high-quality support for anyone who experiences domestic abuse in the Royal Borough.

“It is vital that the power of our strategy reflects the lived experience of victims and gives special consideration to victims of domestic abuse who have protected characteristics including minority groups, and serving military, veterans and their families.

“If you are experiencing domestic abuse or worried about someone else, please contact The DASH Charity, call the national helpline or speak to our housing team or library staff for more information on the support that is available.”

The council also provides advice and support, including emergency safe housing for victims of domestic abuse. All libraries in the Royal Borough are designated safe spaces and library staff are trained to discreetly seek help for victims.
