Feedback on an initial scoping document published by the council will be used to help create a draft Parking Supplementary Planning Document in 2025, that will update existing parking standards that were created 20 years ago.
This will then guide developers to meet the parking needs of residents, local businesses and commuters, deliver safe and pleasant roads and promote connections between communities. It will only apply to parking that is provided in new developments.
The scoping document for public comment includes a set of draft principles and content f and includes learning gained from a detailed look at the parking guidelines used in neighbouring areas.
Ensuring that new developments have the appropriate numbers and types of parking spaces is important and can help to encourage people to walk or cycle more for shorter journeys rather than using their cars. This could have benefits for the environment, for people’s health and wellbeing and for the pleasantness of the area, supporting the council’s commitment to a cleaner and greener borough.
Cllr Adam Bermange, Cabinet member for planning, governance and asset management, said: “Parking is a key consideration for many people who live and work in our borough.
“It is of vital importance that we update the guidance that we provide developers, so that it is modernised to better meet their needs, enhance our local spaces and reflect a shift to more active and environmentally friendly ways of travelling.
“The views of local people and those who work in our borough are crucial so that we can get the balance between those priorities right and provide a cleaner, greener, safer and more prosperous borough for everyone.”
The survey runs until the 11.59pm on 13 January 2025. Draft guidelines will then be created and provided for full consultation later in 2025.
People who live or work in the borough can have their say via the council’s RBWM Together platform. Public access computers are available in Maidenhead Library, Windsor Library and Ascot Library, where they will also be able to request to view a hard copy of the survey.
