More than 45,000 miles walked in Street Tag’s first season

Pupils and their families walked more than 45,000 miles in the first season of the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead’s Street Tag game which transformed the borough into a virtual playground between 10 June and 6 August.

Street Tag is a family-friendly treasure hunt game, using a smartphone app, encouraging players to search their surroundings, on foot or on two wheels, looking for virtual tags hidden across the borough.

The aim of this unique game, which the council is running in partnership with Street Tag following its success in other parts of the country, is to encourage players to be more active and get healthier plus discover and explore places in their communities while having fun and making memories.

Pupils and their families from the 24 Royal Borough schools taking part, took more than 52 million steps playing the game and collected more than 69,000 tags from a wide selection of locations including parks, footpaths and bridleways, leisure centres and other public spaces.

They were also able to add their own tags along their favourite walking, cycling, running, or rolling routes to and from school and out and about at weekends.

Tags mean points, so schools competed against each other in a friendly leaderboard, with £50 now to be awarded to each of the PTA’s at the top two performing schools of this summer season.

This was the first of three eight-week Street Tag seasons in the borough. The next one is due to start on 16 September, again for schools only, with the third early next year open to all residents and communities to join in with the fun.

Councillor Simon Werner, Leader of the Council, said: “It think it’s fair to say that the first season of Street Tag in the Royal Borough has been a resounding success.

“I’m thrilled for the families and their children taking part who enjoyed quality and healthy time outside together while exploring some of the many spaces and places our borough has to offer.”

“If your school didn’t take part in the first season, there’s still time for them to sign up for the second starting this autumn. And of course, we’re looking forward to the third season when all of us can also have a go.”

Seun Oshinaike, Street Tag’s founder and CEO, said: "As we close out this incredible first season, the overwhelming enthusiasm and engagement from the borough’s community has truly exceeded our expectations.

“Street Tag has transformed the simple act of walking into a powerful, joyful experience. This journey is just beginning, and we're delighted to continue creating a future where every step counts."

Players from this season are now invited to complete a quick online survey about their experiences of the game to help inform the autumn game.
