Libraries accessibility scheme

The libraries accessibility scheme has been designed for residents with disabilities and their carers.

The scheme offers a variety of services and resources which are aimed to remove barriers when accessing our Libraries.

These include:

  • Accessible council services;
  • Computer access, printing and visual impairment software;
  • IT support and accessibility sessions
  • Craft sessions and book and resources

Accessible council services

Library staff can help all residents with accessing council services. For help at quieter times, visit Windsor Library or Maidenhead Library during our accessibility sessions. Details of these sessions are in the IT support and accessibility sessions box.

You can get help with:

  • Bus passes.
  • Paying for council services.
  • Council tax
  • Benefits.
  • School applications.
  • Reporting problems.
  • Council applications. 

We can assist with accessing:

  • Adult services.
  • Children services.
  • Health services. 
     

Computer access, printing and software

Accessibility card holders are entitled to:

  • Free computer access.
  • Free printing (up to 20 double sided pages per day).
  • Computer tables accessible for wheelchair users.

Visual Impairment Software 

All PCs offer Accessibility software.

IT support and accessibility sessions

Staff assistance is available with setting up personal devices, accessing our online resources and general IT help.

  • Maidenhead Library: Accessibility morning and IT support. Thursdays 9.30am - 11am drop in. Telephone: 01628 796969.
  • Dedworth Library: Every Thursday, 10am - midday and every other Saturday, 10.30am - midday. Drop in. Telephone: 01753 868733.
  • Windsor Library: Accessibility morning and IT support. Wednesdays midday - 1.30pm. Appointments only. Telephone: 01753 743940.

Craft sessions

Enjoy quieter craft activities during accessibility sessions.

Library accessibility cards entitle you to:

  • Six Week loans.
  • No overdue fees.
  • Free audiobook loans.
  • Library accessibility sessions to access services during a quieter time.

Join the scheme when signing up for the library or ask library staff to update your membership to an Accessibility Card on your next visit. 

Please bring ID that shows your current address when joining.

Books and other resources

Large Print books and Spoken Word CDs 

  • Larger and bolder text for easy reading.
  • Narrated adult and children's stories on CD.

Stock is available in branches and can be reserved to collect at all libraries.

Dyslexia friendly books for children and teens

  • Children and teen stories written by award-winning authors.
  • Unique dyslexia friendly font, accessible layouts and spacing on off-white paper.
  • High interest books for lower levels of reading ability.
  • Look out for the Dyslexia friendly logo on the spine of books. 

Multi-sensory Bag Books

Multi-sensory books designed for people with severe or profound multiple learning disabilities.

Braille and Giant Print Children’s Books 

  • Popular children's stories written in giant print and braille.
  • Selection available at Maidenhead library. Stock can also be reserved to collect at all libraries.

Reminiscence therapy boxes and pictorial non-fiction books

  • Picture books, objects, newspapers, images.
  • Encourages conversation and supports memory.

Safe spaces

Libraries are safe spaces if you are feeling anxious or concerned. You can ask for help and will be signposted to the correct support.
