Election Jobs

The Returning Officer (RO) appoints around 500 people to help run the elections held within the Royal Borough.  Please note that you are welcome to make an application to be added to our pool of staff but we do not have any scheduled elections until May 2027.

The electoral job opportunities available include:

• Polling staff
  The polling station staff are responsible for the conduct of the ballot in each polling station, making sure that the proper procedure for voting is followed. On election day polling station staff are required to work from 6.15am until after 10pm without leaving the polling station. 
• Verification and Counting staff
  These roles are to verify and count the votes cast. Ballot boxes are usually verified on the Thursday evening after the close of poll, starting from approximately 10.00pm until the early hours of the following morning, until the count has concluded. 
• Postal votes staff
  Staff to open postal votes on a number of days in the 10 days prior to an election day in accordance with the election timetable.

We can only accept applications from persons who are over 18 and not connected to, nor will assist any political party or candidate at an election. Persons appointed to work at a polling station or at the count must accept that they are consenting to work in excess of the normal maximum working hours.
