Petroleum

The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead is the Petroleum Enforcement Authority (PEA) responsible for issuing licences and registrations for different types of organisations using or storing petrol in our area.

This function was transferred to us from the Fire Service many years ago, along with some historical records.  In addition to the historical records we hold an archive of our own records from where we have licensed sites, inspected businesses or had information about the presence of petrol tanks.

Request a search

We are able to conduct a search of the records for a given address where petrol has been stored and dispensed which sometimes also contains information relating to leaks and/or making any storage tanks safe.  This can be useful to anyone developing a plot of land or who is concerned about possible historical pollution from stored petrol.

To accurately identify the site and to conduct a search, please provide:

  • your contact details,
  • a map and the address of the site, and
  • any information regarding previous occupants of the site could help speed up the search response.

Please email the information to: trading.standards@rbwm.gov.uk.

Fees

To cover part of the administration cost we levy a charge of £50 if we conduct the search and the result is that there are no petrol tanks or records of leaks at the site, or £100 if some information is present and can be extracted with a full response provided containing all the information that we do hold.

Petroleum Storage Certificates

Premises that wish to store petroleum will, in most cases, need to apply for a Petroleum Storage Certificate.  The form can be completed electronically below.  A general site plan; plan of dispensers, pipework and tanks; and spill containment plan will need to be submitted with the application.  An annual subsistence fee will be charged.  The fee amount is set by statute and is calculated based on the amount of fuel stored.
